Up until recently the Korean scientific community resisted engaging with the creationists out of fear of giving the movement more credibility. However, silence is no anymore an option.
The STR has been campaigning to eliminate content from textbooks that describe evolution, including the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an ancestor of birds. This is only one aspect of how the development paradigm has evolved.
What is Evolution?
The theory of evolution is a branch of science that explains the evolution of genetic traits over time. The theory is based on the fact that living organisms adjust to their environment, which can result in changes to genes or whole genomes. Over many generations these changes could result in the creation of new species. Natural selection is the most popular theory of evolution. It explains how people who have advantages can reproduce faster and longer than those with less favorable traits. This differential reproduction can eventually lead to the emergence and evolution of new species.
The word "evolution" originates from the Latin for revealing or unrolling has been used in many different ways as the concept has developed in both science and elsewhere. Early evolutionists such as Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predestined to change into another species. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire, Lamarck's embryologist pupil who coined the term "transmutation" to describe this theory. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833 challenged this notion and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the idea that existing species evolve into new species in a gradual and predictable manner.
Recently, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process when living creatures develop characteristics that increase their chances of survival, or their ability to reproduce offspring. In time, genetic variation can cause a population to acquire new physical characteristics or biological functions. This variation in gene frequencies is called natural selection, and it is the main driver of evolutionary change. Changes that are not genetic, like an increase in muscle mass from exercise or diet, can't be considered to be evolutionary because they aren't passed down to future generations.

The evidence for evolution is overwhelming. There is no other scientific theory that explains as much about the universe as the life on this planet. It has been rigorously scrutinized and confirmed for a number of years. Many people, and even religious leaders, are in support of the scientific theory. It is important to remember that evolutionary biology does not conflict with religious beliefs, as the theory is based on objects, events and processes in the physical world.
Many religious people have discovered a way to reconcile evolution with their convictions. Certain Christians for instance, believe that God created everything through evolution and that humans have an ancestral connection to other animals.
It is essential that science educators stand up for teaching evolution. In certain countries, anti-evolution sentiment has been growing. In the United States some states have taken steps to limit teaching of evolution. In South Korea, a group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) which is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research, is campaigning for the elimination of textbook content on the evolution of horses as well as the Avian ancestor Archaeopteryx.
It is crucial to keep in mind, however, that the evidence in favor of evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution is based on a variety of sources, such as fossils, genetics and the behavior of living creatures. The evidence is also independently verified by other scientists.
The majority of scientists agree with the theory of evolution. The reasons behind this support vary. Some scientists study evolution to discover practical solutions such as the development of new medicines, while others do so to improve the quality of animal and plant species, usually for the benefit humans. Some are simply curious, whereas still others have a deep religious belief in God and are seeking to understand how the universe functions.
What is Creationism?
Creationists are those who believe that God created the universe and everything within it. They also believe that the Bible is the word of God and should be taken literally. Many creationists are Christians however, not all. Creationists are generally divided into two categories: Young Earth Creationists (YEC) or old earth creationists.
The YECs are perhaps the most well known form of creationist, and they believe that God created the world exactly as described in the Bible. YECs hold that the biblical account of six days of creation was literal and that the universe as well as life on Earth were created only recently.
OECs are less well known, but they are just as committed to their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe that the universe and life on Earth are billions of years old and that evolution is an untruth.
Both types of creationism deny that scientific principles such as natural selection and abiogenesis could explain the origin of life on Earth. They claim that evolution isn't possible because it requires the creation of a miracle, and the founders of modern science rejected miracles out of fear that they would lose credibility.
Some creationists believe in naturalistic evolution as well as special creation, and refer to their position "theistic evolution." This is sometimes known as "continuous creationism" or "evolution from the created species." The theory says that God creates the original species and then allows these to evolve over time. Then the evolutionary changes produce new species that are similar to the original ones.
Other creationists believe that God created the universe and all living things in one event, known as the Great Flood. They believe that all the species of the beginning were created at the same time and then gradually evolved. They also reject the idea of abiogenesis and claim that the self-replicating creation of organisms from nonliving matter is not possible.
In general, creationists are opposed to the teaching of evolution in schools. This position is supported by numerous professional organizations, including the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education and the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. However, certain scientists and educational institutions are more flexible, and allow the inclusion of creationism and evolution in their curricula.
What is Creationism in Korea?
When people think of the concept of creationism most often, they think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolution group. Publishers of high school textbooks have recently declared that they will be removing references to evolution from their editions. A group dubbed the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an independent organization that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research which is the driving force behind the campaign. STR has won its first victory by removing examples of the evolution of the horse and an avian ancestor called the Archeopteryx in textbooks. The next step is to eliminate portions of Darwin's notorious finch-research and also on human evolution.
STR claims to have the support of around 4,000 families and individuals. Its mission is to cut out what it regards as the "atheist materialism" that creates a bleak worldview for students. It also hopes to combat the influence of American Creationists across the country. A survey of biology students teachers revealed that a majority do not believe in evolution. The causes aren't clear however, they could be related to religion and the absence of full-time creation scientists in the country.
The KACR has accomplished a lot in the past through seminars and lectures. It has a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of these was a textbook on natural science with a cosmological perspective. This led to an interest among college communities. In 1991, a professor, together with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught in the present.
On August 6th and 7th of 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. It was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from around the world including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish, and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of a few thousand. KACR members and KACR have also given talks on creation science in major seminaries. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center in the future.
